South Cerney Soldiers To Receive Awards
South Cerney Soldiers who served in Afghanistan making sure that all the Christmas letters and parcels reached their correct destinations are being presented with their Operation Herrick medals at a parade on Thursday 9 June.
Members of 88 Postal Squadron, 29 Regiment Royal Logistic Corps (29 Regt RLC), spent seven months from October 2010 to April 2011 supporting soldiers across the whole British Area of Operations in Helmand Province. The ‘Posties’ were based everywhere, from the massive Camp Bastion to the smallest of the Forward Operating Bases right on the front line, sorting, handling and delivering the morale-boosting mail. During the hectic Christmas period they dealt with over 30,000 bags of letters and parcels.
The parade will also mark the last day 88 Postal Squadron exists as a single unit – it will be amalgamated into other Squadrons to form multi-role units dealing not just with mail but also with the vital role of moving soldiers to various theatres of operations.
The Officer Commanding 88 Postal Squadron, Major Ed Lewis, said, “The time away from families and loved ones is always hard and we are very pleased to be back. It has been a particularly busy tour especially over the Christmas period and the soldiers should be commended for all of their hard work. We are now looking forward to some well-deserved Post Operational Tour Leave after retiring the Squadron in style with a good party – the members of the Squadron are determined to have one last bash all together.”

Cotswold Open Studios: Hidden Treasures 25-26 June
Explore the hidden treasures on 25th and 26th June, 9.30am-5pm each day
Gloucestershire is fast becoming a number one destination for the arts and June is the month to get out and enjoy the huge variety of visual arts in the county. Cotswold Open Studios is a new artist-led initiative with 19 exhibitors (at 16 venues) around Cirencester, now in its second year. The ‘hidden treasures’ (from textile specialists to master craftspeople and from artists and printmakers to sculptors) demonstrate that The Arts and Crafts movement is as alive today in Cirencester as it was in the 19th century. There are so many creative people tucked away, right on the doorstep. They are now throwing open their doors to the public for the weekend. This is a wonderful opportunity to see a working studio; to meet and talk to artists, designers, craftspeople and sculptors; to watch them at work; and to find out about how they make their wonderful creations. Many of the venues are in stunning locations with beautiful gardens. The line-up is mainly professionals with a couple of supporting acts: Joanna Walker and Stephanie Cushing (Preston), Paul Spriggs (South Cerney), Richard Kenton Webb (Siddington), Dorothy Reglar, Loco Glass, Katherine O’Connell, Daniella Wilson-Dunn (New Brewery Arts), Corinne Renow-Clarke (North Cerney), David and Ali Thistlethwaite (Woodmancote), Vanessa Arbuthnott (Calmsden), Tin Odescalchi and Karen Camkin, Hugh and Sophie Blackwell, Kitty Garland (Chedworth), Donald Cordery (Compton Abdale), and Jude McKenna (Ampney St Mary).
‘In 2010, our event attracted people from as far away as Cheshire, Lancashire, Somerset, Nottinghamshire, Wales, London, Sussex and Hampshire. We want to make it as diverse as possible and show that the Arts and Crafts movement is as alive today as it was in the 19th century. It is so important to preserve these unique skills and support our local rural economy. I do hope everyone enjoys this journey of discovery’, says Tessa Webb, director.
This year, art lovers will be treated to a magical mystery tour on a vintage bus. Twenty seven lucky people will be able to book a ride on ‘Old Babs’, the beautiful Alex Cars 1950s Bedford bus. They will be taken on a tour of the open studios around Cirencester on Saturday 25th June, with on board entertainment provided by a travelling minstrel. Tickets are just £15, from the Cirencester Visitor Information Office at the Corinium Museum on 01285 654180. This will make a wonderful day out, with a lunch stop at New Brewery Arts. There is also an opportunity to enter a grand draw. Visitors who hand in the tear off slip at one of the venues (1-15 only) will be entered for the draw, with 10 lucky winners receiving a specially-commissioned signed limited edition print of Cirencester by Richard Kenton Webb.

Pupils To Enjoy Watery Away Day At South Cerney
Pupils from two Cirencester schools will cool off with a watery away-day this month thanks to joint work between Cotswold District Council and Cirencester Town Council.
A group of 12 pupils from Deer Park and Kingshill schools will venture to the Outdoor Education Centre in South Cerney on Monday April 27th for a Team Building Away Day, where they will take part in a range of activities designed to forge team spirit.
The day has been organised as part of the young people’s training to become members of Cirencester Youth Town Council and encourages team-building and problem solving.
In the morning, the pupils will enjoy two hours of team games and challenges, while the water will beckon during the afternoon session – from 1pm-3pm – when the groups can try their hand at raft-building and sailing.
The 12 young people are currently learning how local government works and have already allocated their roles and responsibilities. They are being trained by Cotswold District Council’s Youth Participation and Development Officer
Claire Dowan, in partnership with Cirencester Town Council.
Claire Dowan said: “It is a pleasure to be working Cirencester Town Council on such a positive project.
Youth town councils are an excellent way of involving young people in decision-making and the young people involved in this project are really keen to be involved. The team-building day was their idea and they have fundraised and helped organise the day themselves.”
Andrew Tubb, the CEO of Cirencester Town Council, said: “We welcome the opportunity to work in partnership with Cotswold District Council in establishing a Youth Council for Cirencester.
“The grant funding from the Town Council recognises the commitment of the young people in wanting to build on their self-confidence as individuals and in working together as a team.”
For further information, please contact Claire Dowan on 01285 623000 or by email, Claire.dowan@cotswold.gov.uk

Statement on Missing Mother and Daughter
Following the discovery of two bodies in a lake close to The Landings in South Cerney yesterday, post mortem investigations have taken place and the results indicate that both persons died from drowning.
Formal identification has not yet taken place but it is expected to be completed by the end of today.
Police are currently treating the deaths of the woman and child as unexplained.
Detective Chief Inspector Andy Wasley, officer-in-charge of the case, said: “At this moment in time we remain open-minded as to the circumstances of these deaths and are exploring a number of lines of enquiry to ascertain exactly what happened.
“A team of officers are analysing the forensic evidence, talking to all those who entered and exited the estate over the weekend and examining CCTV, mobile phone telephony and computer records.
“A detailed forensic search of the house and surrounding area is continuing to take place today and while we understand this may cause some disruption to neighbours we hope they will understand the necessity of such activity.
“Our sympathies at this time are with the family and friends of Jude and Millie and it is essential that we conduct a thorough and painstaking investigation for the sake of everyone involved."
Superintendent Bridget Woodhall said: “We would like to thank everyone who has reported sightings to us for their assistance. We are working hard to speak to all those who have contacted us as quickly as possible but due to the volume of calls we have received we would ask for people’s patience in regards to this.
“We are also very grateful for all the assistance and hospitality the local community has shown us during what is obviously a very difficult time. We will be looking to assist local residents in returning to normality".
Following further consultation with a witness it is now believed that the reported sighting of Jude and Millie with a man at the gates of their estate in fact took place between 5pm and 5.15pm on Saturday, rather than Sunday as originally stated.
However, another witness has reported seeing Jude walking side by side with an as yet unidentified man in Silver Street, by the junction with Meadow Way, South Cerney, between 3pm and 3.30pm on Sunday, March 15, with Millie a few metres behind them. The man is described as in his forties, with short dark hair.
CCTV has confirmed that Millie and Jude left Dobbie's Garden Centre in Siddington, near Cirencester, at approximately 4.35pm on Sunday.
Police are keen to establish the last known movements of Jude and Millie on Sunday, March 15 and anyone with further information is urged to call Gloucestershire Police on 0845 090 1234, quoting incident 138 of March 16th.

New Recycling Banks For Villages
New recycling facilities have been introduced in two Cotswold villages.
A large recycling bank for all types of plastic bottles has been installed at Birdlip, just past the village primary school on Roman Road.
Meanwhile, at South Cerney, a container for Tetra Pak type drinks cartons has been added to the recycling facilities at the Upper Up Playing Field car park.
However, the paper, glass and can recycling banks at the railway station car park in Kemble have been removed on the instructions of the landowner, First Great Western. Efforts are now being made to find a suitable alternative site for the containers.
Cotswold District Council Waste Manager Scott Williams said: “We want to give residents as many opportunities as possible to recycle their waste and hope these new facilities will be well used by the residents of Birdlip and South Cerney.
“It is disappointing that the recycling banks at Kemble have had to be removed from the station car park but we will work with the local community to try to find an alternative site.”
Residents throughout the Cotswold District are urged to use facilities responsibly by ensuring that the correct materials are put in the recycling banks and that no waste or recyclables are left outside or on top of containers.
If recycling banks is completely full, residents can report it to the Council on 01285 623123 so that arrangements can be made for them to be emptied.
Mr Williams added: “Ninety-nine per cent of those residents who use the recycling banks are doing a great job but there are a few people who abuse the facilities.
“There have been cases of rubbish being dumped next to facilities and people putting the wrong materials in the banks. We would urge this small minority to stop acting selfishly and think more about the environment.”

Zycko, a value-added distributor of converged solutions (based in South Cerney), has launched an EMEA-wide channel recruitment campaign, designed to expand its Isilon sales into a range of additional high-profile verticals.
In a move that will amplify Zycko's Isilon reseller coverage, Zycko intends to expand sales of the vendor's technology into the leading verticals of oil and gas, graphic design, desk-top publishing, marketing, web-serving and digital content delivery.
In order to support its expansion into these key verticals, Zycko also intends to recruit an additional 10 resellers under Isilon by the end of February 2007.
David Galton-Fenzi, group sales director at Zycko, said the recruitment of additional resellers would help to establish it as a key EMEA distribution partner for the vendor and stimulate sales for all its Isilon VARs, across an enhanced mix of vibrant and sales-rich verticals.
"Isilon is a best-in-class technology and ideally positioned to service the pain points of businesses in a multitude of verticals, such as oil and gas, that are looking for truly next generation clustered storage solutions," he said. "However, to support this drive we will need more resellers and hence VAR recruitment is fundamental."
Owing to its award-winning distribution experience across multiple geographic regions, Zycko is perfectly placed to both identify key market verticals and expand into them.
For example, the oil and gas vertical represents a clear opportunity for Isilon technology. This is because it addresses a direct requirement for the storage of geophysical data within a single global namespace, so that it can be accessed on demand by users and applications.
Tom Pettigrew, vice president of global sales partners at Isilon Systems, said: "We are pleased that Zycko has decided to pro-actively recruit additional VARs. Isilon's clustered storage solutions are specifically designed to address the challenges created by the rapid and continual growth of digital content in a wide range of vertical industries, including oil and gas, among many others. With Isilon IQ, Zycko can deliver substantial ROI and lower operating costs to customers while providing VARs with plentiful and unique sales opportunities."
In December, Isilon announced an initial public offering of 8.3m shares, priced at $13 per share, which was later revealed to be the highest performing technology IPO in the United States during 2006.

Zycko unveils unified strategy for WEEE compliance
VARs to benefit from new service
Zycko, a value-added distributor of convergent storage and IP solutions based in South Cerney, has created a multilayered Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) compliancy service combining data eradication and end-of-life IT hardware disposal services.
Zycko Pro Asset Management is an innovative branded service from Zycko, which corresponds with the implementation of the WEEE directive into UK law earlier this month.
Pro Asset Management enables Zycko's VARs to both dispose of businesses' IT hardware and offer additional services to destroy any data held on redundant storage devices, therefore eradicating the possibility that a businesses' data can be compromised once a storage device is thrown away.
David Galton-Fenzi, group sales director at Zycko, said Pro Asset Management is an all-in-one WEEE compliancy service from Zycko, which enables its VARs to offer a wider range of WEEE services and to stand out in a crowded marketplace.
"There are already businesses offering disposal of IT hardware, according to the rules of the WEEE directive," he said. "However, we are one of the first distributors to provide resellers with the opportunity to expand their WEEE services by also offering to ensure the total eradication of data."
By supplying a data destruction service, in addition to WEEE hardware disposal, Zycko's VARs can provide businesses' with complete piece of mind that any data unwittingly left on a redundant hard drive is removed.
Zycko's resellers will be able to offer their customers a number of options to ensure complete data destruction, such as a degausing technique that uses powerful magnets to eliminate all magnetic properties from a hard drive.
"Zycko is committed to reducing the levels of IT hardware incorrectly disposed of in the UK each year and to reducing their resulting impact on the environment," added Galton-Fenzi. "This service will also enable resellers to cross-sell a standard WEEE service and generate additional margins for their business."

Youth Parish Council planned for South Cerney
Plans to set up a Youth Parish Council for South Cerney are to be discussed at a public meeting in the Village Hall at 6.30pm on Tuesday, March 28th.
The young councillors – aged 11 to 18 - would be elected by their peers to mirror the work of the active Parish Council.
The proposal was put forward by Claire Dowan, Cotswold District Council's Youth Participation Officer, who is working on a number of new initiatives with young people across the District.
Claire said: "The aim is to encourage young people to take an interest in their community and to come up with ideas that they would like to take forward."
"The Youth Parish Council would have 11 members, with committees to look at special projects for young people in the village. They would look after their own budget and set their own agenda."
"The idea has already gained a lot of support from local people and there was a good turnout at the first meeting we held to gauge interest earlier this year."
"We're urging any young people who’d like to be involved to come along to South Cerney Village Hall at 6.30pm on March 28th to put their ideas forward – or their names up for election."
Clerk to the Parish Council Maurice McKee said: "Parish Councillors are extremely interested in this new initiative and thoroughly support the concept. One of the stated aims of the Parish Council's recently compiled Village Plan is to involve youth in village activities."
It is hoped the Youth Parish Council will be up and running later this year. For more information, please contact Claire Dowan on 01285 623568.

Concern over traffic islands on South Cerney road
A South Cerney woman has called for the Highways Department to do something positive before another life is lost on a South Cerney Road.
The Spine Road on the outskirts of South Cerney is used heavily by cars and gravel lorries, the latter of which probably contribute a lot to the often muddy state of the road.
In a letter to the Wilts and Glos Standard the South Cerney resident writes that the islands erected to calm the traffic are just a hazard as they are not illuminated, and even if they were they are so dirty you cannot see them.

Over 60s urged to choose bus pass or travel tokens
Cotswold residents are being asked to decide if they wish to receive free bus travel or a limited number of travel tokens, following a shake-up in the law.
From April 2006, everyone aged over 60 is entitled to a bus pass, which allows free unlimited travel on any journey that starts in the Cotswold District and does not involve a change of bus. Under the present system, the pass covers only half the fare.
The pass can be used on all registered local transport services but cannot be used on long-distance coach services, excursions, rail services, dial-a-ride, taxi or private-hire services or social car schemes.
Tokens will, as now, still be available for use in taxis and non-registered transport services, but will remain at the value of £16.
Cotswold District Council, which runs the scheme, has sent out more than 10,000 application forms to residents aged over 60 and people with certain disabilities who are entitled to the passes. Now it is urging people to return the forms as soon as possible.
Residents cannot receive both tokens and a pass – they may only have one or the other – and once they have made a choice, they cannot change it until April 2007.
There is no charge made for the tokens or the bus pass, which is valid for a year, but applicants must send a passport-sized photograph if they are applying for a pass for the first time.
While there will be no time limit on bus travel, operators are entitled not to pick up passholders before 9.30am on the grounds of limited space on specific services.

Beaver release confusion
Despite reports that the Department for Environment, Food and Regional Affairs (DEFRA) may have suggested that the release of six European beavers by Jeremy Paxton on his Lower Mill Estate near South Cerney in Gloucestershire could be illegal, The Mirror reports that DEFRA have said that it did not intend to suggest that Paxton had committed an offence. Indeed, The Mirror reports that Government officials have praised Jeremy Paxton for his bid to reintroduce beavers into Britain. While the release of creatures that are not normally resident into the wild may be illegal, Paxton has released the animals into his private Lower Mill Estate, not into the wild. The Beavers will be the first to roam wild in the UK for centuries. To start with, the Beavers will be confined to a 500-acre site but at a later date experts hope they can roam freely.
